Description
The Russell avocado is a rare, heirloom West Indian avocado variety first cultivated by the Russell family in Islamorada, Florida, dating back to the 1880s. Known as a “long neck” avocado, it has a distinctive elongated, gourd- or bowling-pin shape that can grow up to 12 to 18 inches (or 33 centimeters) long and weigh anywhere from 12 ounces to over 3 pounds. It has a pale yellow-green interior with a mild, sweet, and buttery flavor. Because it has a lower oil content than a Hass avocado, it eats lighter and is typically enjoyed fresh on its own rather than used for heavy guacamole
